The Glow-Up Guide: Which Face Serum Is Right for Your Skin?
The Glow-Up Guide: Which Face Serum Is Right for Your Skin?
With so many incredible serums now available, knowing which one is right for your skin can feel overwhelming. The truth is, the best face serum for your skin type isn't the most expensive one, or the most hyped — it's the one that targets your specific concerns with the right ingredients at the right concentration.
At Visions of You Beautiful, we've just launched six brand-new face serums, each formulated to address a different skin need. Whether you're battling dullness, enlarged pores, early signs of ageing, or just want skin that glows from the inside out, this guide will help you find your perfect match.
What Does Each Serum Actually Do for Your Skin?
Let's start with a quick introduction to each serum in our collection and what it's designed to do:
Vita C Glow Serum: A brightening powerhouse that uses vitamin C to fade dark spots, even skin tone, and deliver that sought-after lit-from-within radiance. Best for: dull, uneven, or sun-damaged skin.
Niacinamide Serum: A true multi-tasker that minimises pores, balances oil, calms redness, and strengthens the skin barrier. Best for: oily, acne-prone, or sensitive skin.
Prickly Pear Seed Oil Serum: A rare, nutrient-rich botanical oil loaded with vitamin E and fatty acids. It plumps, repairs, and restores a youthful bounce. Best for: dry, mature, or stressed skin.
Pomegranate Seed Oil Serum: A potent antioxidant-rich oil that fights free radical damage and supports skin cell regeneration. Best for: ageing concerns and loss of firmness.
Retinol Serum: The gold-standard anti-ageing ingredient. Retinol accelerates cell turnover, smooths fine lines, and refines skin texture over time. Best for: anti-ageing and textural concerns.
Glycolic Acid 15% Serum: A chemical exfoliant that dissolves dead skin cells to reveal smoother, brighter skin underneath. Best for: dullness, rough texture, and hyperpigmentation.
Dry vs. Oily vs. Sensitive: Your Serum Match Guide
Your skin type is the best starting point when choosing a serum. Here's a simple match guide:
Dry skin
Your skin is crying out for moisture and lipid replenishment. Reach for our Prickly Pear Seed Oil Serum or Pomegranate Seed Oil Serum — both are rich in essential fatty acids that restore the skin's natural barrier and prevent trans epidermal water loss. Layer either oil over your water-based serum and under your moisturizer for best results.
Oily or acne-prone skin
You need balance, not stripping. Our Niacinamide Serum is your new best friend — it regulates sebum production without over-drying, meaning your skin stops overcompensating with more oil. Pair it with the Glycolic Acid 15% Serum 2–3 times a week to keep pores clear and skin smooth.
Sensitive skin
Tread gently. Start with our Niacinamide Serum, which has a well-documented anti-inflammatory effect on reactive skin. If you want to introduce actives like retinol or glycolic acid, do so slowly — once a week to start, and always follow with a barrier-supporting moisturizer.
Dull or uneven skin
Your skin needs brightness and exfoliation. The Vita C Glow Serum is your first call — use it every morning for a lit-from-within glow. Alternate with Glycolic Acid 15% in the evenings to accelerate cell turnover and reveal fresh skin faster.
Mature or ageing skin
Your focus is cell regeneration and antioxidant protection. Use our Retinol Serum three nights a week to stimulate collagen and support it with the Pomegranate Seed Oil Serum on off nights for deep antioxidant repair.
Can You Layer Serums? Here's the Golden Rule
Yes — and knowing how to layer correctly means you get the benefits of multiple products without irritation. Here are the rules:
• Apply water-based serums first (Vita C Glow, Niacinamide, Retinol, Glycolic Acid), then oil-based serums (Prickly Pear, Pomegranate Seed Oil) on top.
• Wait 30–60 seconds between layers to allow each product to absorb.
• Don't mix Glycolic Acid with Retinol on the same night — both are potent and can cause irritation together. Alternate them instead.
• Vitamin C and Niacinamide can be used together safely — the old advice about them clashing has been largely debunked. Apply vitamin C first, let it dry, then niacinamide.
Pro tip: Think of your routine like getting dressed. Start with the thinnest 'layer' (your water serums) and finish with the richest (your oils and moisturizer).
Morning vs. Night — When to Use Each Serum
The time of day you apply your serum matters more than most people realize. Here's your simple guide:
Morning routine
Vita C Glow Serum — vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that protects your skin from UV damage and pollution throughout the day. Always follow with SPF.
Niacinamide Serum — also works beautifully in the AM to keep oil balanced and skin calm throughout the day.
Evening routine
Retinol Serum — retinol breaks down in sunlight, so it must be used at night. This is also when your skin does its best repair work.
Glycolic Acid 15% — use on evenings when you're not using retinol. Never use both on the same night.
Prickly Pear Seed Oil / Pomegranate Seed Oil — these rich oils are perfect as the final step in your evening routine, sealing in all the goodness from your serums underneath.
Real Ingredient Science: No Fluff, Just Facts
We believe you deserve to know exactly what you're putting on your skin — and why it works. Here's the short science behind each serum:
• Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) inhibits melanin synthesis — that's the technical way of saying it stops dark spots from forming and fades existing ones.
• Niacinamide (vitamin B3) strengthens the ceramide layer of the skin, reducing water loss and calming inflammatory responses.
• Prickly pear seed oil contains the highest known levels of vitamin E of any cosmetic oil — up to 150% more than argan oil.
• Punicic acid in pomegranate seed oil has been shown to promote keratinocyte proliferation, meaning it actively supports new skin cell growth.
• Retinol converts to retinoic acid in the skin, which directly stimulates collagen production and accelerates cell turnover.
• Glycolic acid, at 15%, provides both immediate exfoliation and long-term improvements in skin thickness and collagen density with regular use.
